GIS stands for Geographical information systems. GIS has grown over the past three decades from a static-map production to dynamic visualisation of maps. Fundamentally, GIS database is organised into thematic layers to present and provide solutions to hydrology, transportation, environment, communication and everyday life. The fast growing profession is also presenting new areas of research in GIS. They include the Open Source GIS movement, the Public Participation GIS Concept for extending GIS capabilities to non-professionals, the dynamic capabilities of Web GIS and the development and use of wide array of Decision Support Systems.
